(5 Jun 2017) LEADIN: A group of transgender women in Argentina is taking to the stage to challenge prejudices and make their voices heard. The theatre cooperative Art Trans is the first organisation of its kind in Latin America and hopes to become a fixture on Buenos Aires' theatre circuit. STORYLINE: A night out at the theatre in Buenos Aires. But this is production is aiming to be more than just entertainment. It's shining a spotlight on Argentina's transgender community and telling the stories behind the stereotypes. The performers are all transgender women who have come together to form a theatre cooperative called Arte Trans. They write, produce, perform and direct their own plays, which are based on their own experiences as members of the trans community. Founded in 2010, the cooperative of 20 trans women were fed up with the limited opportunities available in existing productions and started writing their own plays instead. Emma Serna, the president of Arte Trans, says the cooperative gives an independent voice to those who have always been marginalised. "The auditions always put you in the position of the stereotype of a trans girl, the stereotype of a woman, the stereotype of a lot of things. So we wanted to do plays, to tell different stories to those being told at the moment, and with that goal, the cooperative was born," she says. "And also, (we wanted) to have real work, and to build an institution, to become sort of theatre producers of events that we'd like to do and put them on the market, to show a different look." Serna says their plays confront the issues that trans women face every day in Argentina, in particular, discrimination as a result of their sexuality and the struggle to find jobs other than sex work. So far, they have performed seven plays, with titles including "Monologues of the Tits with a Penis", "Made in Lanus" and "Hotel Golondrina", which the Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires declared to be of interest for the promotion and defence of human rights in 2014. They have also performed theatre classics such as Federico Garcia Lorca's "The House of Bernarda Alba". Up to now, more than 50,000 people have seen Arte Trans' plays, the group says. Tonight, four members of the cooperative are performing at Paco Urondo theatre in a play called "The Irredenta", directed by Serna. This dramatic comedy takes place in a brothel, where three trans prostitutes rebel against the madam and start wondering about another kind of life. For these performers, the opportunity to make art for a living has become a way of healing wounds and expressing themselves. Previously, they were much more used to being bullied and discriminated against than applauded and recognised for their talent. Andrea Cantero has been a member of the cooperative since 2015 and has loved acting since she was a child. "It's a release of endorphins, it's a load of energy, immense adrenaline, that I love. It's like a leap into the void. It is being there in front of the public, who are looking at you, waiting for the best from you, and you have no other choice: you go on stage or you go on stage. And I love it," she says. In "La irredenta", Andrea plays a prostitute who dreams of getting married and having a family, but is threatened by the madam of the brothel who does not allow her to leave. Sex work is a key theme in many of the group's plays. The cooperative was initially conceived as an alternative form of employment for those trans women working on the streets. In fact, almost half of the members still carry out sex work, which in Argentina continues to be the most common form of employment for transgender women. Estela Dramisino came with a friend to see Arte Trans' work for the first time. Peter Tosh captured live VO emulovore com] Filmed AT THE GREEK THEATER -AUGUST 23. 1983 Peter Tosh, OM (born Winston Hubert McIntosh; 19 October1944 – 11 September 1987) was a Jamaican reggae musician. Along with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer, he was one of the core members of the band The Wailers (19631976), after which he established himself as a successful solo artist and a promoter of Rastafari. He was murdered in 1987 during a home invasion. Early music and with The Wailers Tosh was born in Westmoreland, the westernmost parish of Jamaica. He was abandoned by his parents and "shuffled among relatives."[2] When McIntosh was fifteen, his aunt died and he moved to Trenchtown in Kingston, Jamaica. He first picked up a guitar by watching a man in the country play a song that captivated him. He watched the man play the same song for half a day, memorizing everything his fingers were doing. He then picked up the guitar and played the song back to the man. The man then asked McIntosh who had taught him to play; McIntosh told him that he had.[3] During the early 1960s Tosh met Robert Nesta Marley (Bob Marley) and Neville O'Reilly Livingston (Bunny Wailer) and went to vocal teacher Joe Higgs, who gave out free vocal lessons to young people, in hopes to form a new band. He then changed his name to become Peter Tosh and the trio started singing together in 1962. Higgs taught the trio to harmonize and while developing their music, they would often play on the street corners of Trenchtown. In 1964 Tosh helped organize the band The Wailing Wailers, with Junior Braithwaite, a falsetto singer, and backup singers Beverley Kelso and Cherry Smith. Initially, Tosh was the only one in the group who could play musical instruments. According to Bunny Wailer, Tosh was critical to the band because he was a self-taught guitarist and keyboardist, and thus became an inspiration for the other band members to learn to play. The Wailing Wailers had a major ska hit with their first single, "Simmer Down", and recorded several more successful singles before Braithwaite, Kelso and Smith left the band in late 1965. Marley spent much of 1966 in Delaware in the United States with his mother, Cedella (Malcolm) Marley-Booker, and for a brief time was working at a nearby Chrysler factory. He then returned to Jamaica in early 1967 with a renewed interest in music and a new spirituality. Tosh and Bunny were already Rastafarians when Marley returned from the U.S., and the three became very involved with the Rastafari faith. Soon afterwards, they renamed the musical group The Wailers. Tosh would explain later that they chose the name Wailers because to "wail" means to mourn or to, as he put it, "...express one's feelings vocally". He also claims that he was the beginning of the group, and that it was he who first taught Bob Marley the guitar. The latter claim may very well be true, for according to Bunny Wailer, the early Wailers learned to play instruments from Tosh. Rejecting the up-tempo dance of ska, the band slowed their music to a rocksteady pace, and infused their lyrics with political and social messages inspired by their new-found faith. The Wailers composed several songs for the American-born singer Johnny Nash before teaming with producer Lee Perry to record some of the earliest well-known reggae songs, including "Soul Rebel", "Duppy Conqueror", and "Small Axe". The collaboration had given birth to reggae music and later, bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett and his brother, drummer Carlton Barrett would join the group in 1970. The band signed a recording contract with Chris Blackwell and Island Records company and released their debut, Catch a Fire, in 1973, following it with Burnin' the same year. The Wailers had moved from many producers after 1970 and there were instances where producers would record rehearsal sessions that Tosh did and release them in England under the name "Peter Touch". The Peter Tosh Museum was opened on Peter Tosh's 72nd Birthday on 19 October 2016 in Kingston, Jamaica. Theatrical act calling all women to stand up for their rights during 'One Billion Rising from South Asia', a campaign organized by V-Day, a global activist movement to end violence against women, and national women's rights organizations and networks at Parliament street in Delhi. One Billion Rising is a global campaign by women, for women. The movement calls for an end to violence, and for justice and gender equality. On February 14, 2013, a one-day event was held, a call for one billion women around the world to join together to dance in a show of collective strength. The event was held on the 15th anniversary of the V-Day movement. The word "billion" refers the statistic that one in three women will be raped or beaten in their lifetime, or about one billion. ONE BILLION RISING IS: A global strike An invitation to dance A call to men and women to refuse to participate in the status quo until rape and rape culture ends An act of solidarity, demonstrating to women the commonality of their struggles and their power in numbers A refusal to accept violence against women and girls as a given A new time and a new way of being On September 20, 2012, people from 160 countries had signed up to take part in the campaign. On February 14, 2013, the rally was held in more than 190 countries. The campaign was initiated by playwright and activist Eve Ensler (known for her play The Vagina Monologues), and her organization V-Day. The campaign was in part inspired by the Todd Akin 'legitimate rape' and pregnancy comment controversy. Ensler, shocked at Akin's statement, wrote an open letter in response. Around 5,000 organizations have joined the campaign, which has also been aided or endorsed by religious ministers, movement builders, actors Rosario Dawson, Robert Redford and Stella Creasy, British Labour Co-operative politician.
