Desire Under the Elms by Eugene O'Neill: Summary When the play opens, the two sons of old Ephraim, Simeon and Peter are very excited and determined to go to gold mining in California. They want to be free from the toil of farm work. One day, their father leaves for the town and keeping his sons Simeon, Peter and Eben in the farm. They all hate old Ephraim for various reasons. The two sons of the first wife hate him for being so greedy and making them work so hard in the farm, and Eben shuns him for snatching his mother's land and not being a good husband to his mother. In their father's absence, Eben makes a plan to get rid of his two brothers once and for all. He knows that they want to go to California, but they are backed off because of lack of money. He proposes them to sign in a paper renouncing all claims to the farm and promise to give them a hundred dollars each. The two brothers happily accept his offer and set off for California. After a while, Ephraim appears in the farm with his third wife, Abbie. He is seventy-five years old and his new wife is just thirty-five. Abbie has married the old man just for the sake of home and security. Eben hates her because he thinks that she has come to snatch the land of his mother. Abbie tries hard to make friend to Eben but all goes to vain. As the time passes, Eben realizes the life has become easier after Abbie comes to the farm. Abbie falsely blames Eben for making advances of her and tells it to her husband. Old Ephraim being so angry threatened him to kill. But, Abbie pacifies him and convinces him to give birth to a son who would claim the land after their death and that would be a better way of getting back at Eben than to kill him. Ephraim in dream of having a son even at the age of seventy-five agrees to leave Eben alone. One night, Ephraim goes to sleep out in the barn. Abbie thinks of seducing Eben for the sake of having a son. She lures Eben in his mother's parlor, which remained closed after his mother's death. She convinces him to have sex with her and take revenge with Ephraim for the ill treatment of his mother. He agrees and enjoys the copulation. Abbie gives birth to a son and to celebrate his birth, Ephraim invites his neighbors and friends. They dance and drink in the kitchen of the farmhouse. Many of his guests doubt on the father ship of Ephraim and directly make the point. He pretends not to listen to and goes on dancing. Ephraim goes out to cool himself off and meets Eben. They have a quarrel over the possession of the land. In anger, Ephraim tells Eben that Abbie has tricked him by having a son who would inherit the land. Hurt and furious Eben threatened Abbie to kill her son he has fathered. By this time, she genuinely loves Eben and wants to prove her love to him. She kills the baby to justify her love for Eben that she wants Eben not the baby. Enraged and shocked Eben goes to take the sheriff for Abbie's arrest. But, on his return with the sheriff, he realizes her love to him and confesses his part in the crime. They are arrested and taken to the punishment. Old Ephraim is left alone in the farm. (5 Jun 2017) LEADIN: A group of transgender women in Argentina is taking to the stage to challenge prejudices and make their voices heard. The theatre cooperative Art Trans is the first organisation of its kind in Latin America and hopes to become a fixture on Buenos Aires' theatre circuit. STORYLINE: A night out at the theatre in Buenos Aires. But this is production is aiming to be more than just entertainment. It's shining a spotlight on Argentina's transgender community and telling the stories behind the stereotypes. The performers are all transgender women who have come together to form a theatre cooperative called Arte Trans. They write, produce, perform and direct their own plays, which are based on their own experiences as members of the trans community. Founded in 2010, the cooperative of 20 trans women were fed up with the limited opportunities available in existing productions and started writing their own plays instead. Emma Serna, the president of Arte Trans, says the cooperative gives an independent voice to those who have always been marginalised. "The auditions always put you in the position of the stereotype of a trans girl, the stereotype of a woman, the stereotype of a lot of things. So we wanted to do plays, to tell different stories to those being told at the moment, and with that goal, the cooperative was born," she says. "And also, (we wanted) to have real work, and to build an institution, to become sort of theatre producers of events that we'd like to do and put them on the market, to show a different look." Serna says their plays confront the issues that trans women face every day in Argentina, in particular, discrimination as a result of their sexuality and the struggle to find jobs other than sex work. So far, they have performed seven plays, with titles including "Monologues of the Tits with a Penis", "Made in Lanus" and "Hotel Golondrina", which the Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires declared to be of interest for the promotion and defence of human rights in 2014. They have also performed theatre classics such as Federico Garcia Lorca's "The House of Bernarda Alba". Up to now, more than 50,000 people have seen Arte Trans' plays, the group says. Tonight, four members of the cooperative are performing at Paco Urondo theatre in a play called "The Irredenta", directed by Serna. This dramatic comedy takes place in a brothel, where three trans prostitutes rebel against the madam and start wondering about another kind of life. For these performers, the opportunity to make art for a living has become a way of healing wounds and expressing themselves. Previously, they were much more used to being bullied and discriminated against than applauded and recognised for their talent. Andrea Cantero has been a member of the cooperative since 2015 and has loved acting since she was a child. "It's a release of endorphins, it's a load of energy, immense adrenaline, that I love. It's like a leap into the void. It is being there in front of the public, who are looking at you, waiting for the best from you, and you have no other choice: you go on stage or you go on stage. And I love it," she says. In "La irredenta", Andrea plays a prostitute who dreams of getting married and having a family, but is threatened by the madam of the brothel who does not allow her to leave. Sex work is a key theme in many of the group's plays. The cooperative was initially conceived as an alternative form of employment for those trans women working on the streets. In fact, almost half of the members still carry out sex work, which in Argentina continues to be the most common form of employment for transgender women. Estela Dramisino came with a friend to see Arte Trans' work for the first time. Stereotypes about Roma women will be broken and more than that, Romani culture will be celebrated. As a Roma woman and actress herself, Mihaela talks fearlessly about integration, attributes that the society sets when it comes to Roma women and more than that about how can we integrate these minorities in the cultural life. Mihaela Drăgan is a Roma actress, activist and playwright, who lives and works in Bucharest. Her performances focus on the connection between theatre, Roma identity and social justice. She is the president of the Roma Actors Association and the president of the board of E-Romnja – The Association for Promoting Roma Women’s Rights. In 2014, she founded Giuvlipen Theatre Company, the first Roma feminist theatre group, formed by professional actresses of Roma origins in Bucharest. Their latest performance, Gadjo Dildo, talks about sexuality, love, queerness and exotization of Roma women. She studied acting and Romani language and collaborated over the years with Logos Theatre and Theatre for Few in projects that focused on expressionism, eurhythmics and acrobatics. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
